Backbone Design

Backbone Design (BBDsgn) is an integrated software package that addresses backbone topological design and simulation, as well as maintenance issues using TDM multiplexers, Routers, Frame Relay switches, and ATM switches. Several hardware devices are currently modeled by the Backbone Design program.

Backbone Design Features:

Capacity Planning and Topological Design
The impact of adding new demands can be analyzed in network model before they are placed onto the real network. BBDsgn can determine whether there is enough available capacity, recommend places to add more capacity, and detect potential bottlenecks within the network. BBDsgn can automatically design a network based on end-to-end transmission bandwidth requirements, starting from an existing set of backbone trunks or from scratch. Using powerful heuristic algorithms, BBDsgn can evaluate whether trunks can be pruned from the network without compromising diversity constraints.
Hardware Specific Device Library
Hardware specific device models have been developed by WANDL with the cooperation of the device vendors. This ensures the accuracy and precision of the model, as well as the support of many device-specific features.
Path Assignments
For an existing backbone network, the optimal layout or path assignment can be determined which satisfies all demand constraints. Demand constraints may include media preferences, diverse paths, and hardware bandwidth overhead calculations. Available paths can be found even when the hardware fails find a path. If the hardware switch supports user-specified paths, then paths found using the model can be downloaded to the real network.
Failure Simulation
Exhaustive and customizable failure scenarios can be simulated to analyze and evaluate a networks topology.
Tariffs
NPAT can help reduce the private line leasing costs (monthly recurring and non-recurring components) by producing designs that satisfy user requirements and constraints while maintaining minimal cost. Customizable tariff databases/pricing tables are integrated into the NPAT suite to price out lines, and used extensively in NPAT's heuristic design algorithms.
Detailed Design and Analysis Reports
As with all NPAT modules, detailed reports are generated. These reports include trunk pricing, trunk utilization, demand paths, and design layout. Reports are generated in text format, CSV format, or HTML.

Add-on Features:

Discrete Event Simulation
Packet-by-packet simulation is available for Frame Relay and router device models, giving statistics on queuing delays and packet loss ratios.
Domain/Structured Networks
Partitioned or structured networks, including PNNI, is supported by BBDsgn. Device-specific support of domains is also correctly modeled.
Traffic Load Analysis
Real traffic load per PVC can be loaded into the NPAT model to obtain a more accurate link utilization for failure simulations.
